Stannard is a town in
Caledonia County,
Vermont,
United States. The population was 185 at the 2000 census. The town has no paved roads.
Geography
According to the
United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.5
square miles (32.5
km²), of which, 12.5 square miles (32.4 km²) of it's land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.24%) is water.
Demographics
As of the
census of 2000, there were 185 people, 73 households, and 54 families residing in the town. The
population density was 14.8 people per square mile (5.7/km²). There were 106 housing units at an average density of 8.5/sq mi (3.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.92%
White, 0.54%
African American, 0.54% from
other races.
Hispanic or
Latino of any race were 0.54% of the population.
There were 73 households out of which 37.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were
married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.7% were non-families. 20.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 2.82.
In the town the population was spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 2.2% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 110.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 107.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $36,250, and the median income for a family was $35,625. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,750 for females. The
per capita income for the town was $15,196. About 13.2% of families and 18.8% of the population were below the
poverty line, including 13.3% of those under the age of eighteen and 41.2% of those sixty five or over.
History
Previously known as Goshen Gore No. 1, the town was incorporated as Stannard in honor of General
George J. Stannard, a
Union Army hero of the
Civil War. Stannard and his
2nd Vermont Brigade broke
Pickett's charge and beat back troops from
Florida and
Alabama. He was commended by the Vermont legislature in 1865 for his "skill and bravery."
